THE PERFUME

A fragrance that is still being tested, whose chemical properties begin to change her personality, making her a selfish, narcissistic, and consumerist person. Unable to control her actions on social media, she becomes a threat to a corporation that aims to control everything, and everyone.

LOGLINE

Trapped in a psychiatric hospital after attempting suicide, a troubled young woman must unleash her creativity to escape the clutches of a manipulative psychiatrist who preys on vulnerable women with mental health problems.

SYNOPSIS

After the unexpected death of her father in an accident, Samantha, a creative and sarcastic young woman, is admitted to a mysterious psychiatric hospital for a suicide attempt. There, she receives a visit from her childhood imaginary friend, with whom she was secretly in love. According to the doctors, Samantha has an extremely vivid imagination and is suffering from serious hallucinations.

As the story unfolds, Samantha realizes that there is an evil within the hospital that is far worse than her symptoms. And she must face not only herself, the confinement, and the challenges of severe depression, but also the psychiatrist in charge, Doc. Ravencroff, who uses dark methods to manipulate his patients in the most twisted ways.

However, the sudden suicide of one of the residents and the subsequent disappearance of her invisible friend will leave Samantha fearing for her life and questioning both her treatment and the reality of her fantasies.

Who gets to decide what is normal? What is healthy? Does she even deserve to be free? These and many other questions will shake Samantha as she tries to get to know herself while exploring her own limits and battling her dangerous symptoms.

Until unexplained events at the sinister hospital and the support of unexpected friendships lead Samantha to discover that only by accepting herself will she have a chance to escape her forced destiny and finally find her true colors beyond the shadows.

Writer's Statement

This story offers a critical exploration of the social stigma surrounding mental illness, drawing on real-life experiences within the neurodivergent community. Through Samantha's compelling journey, we delve into her complex mind, grappling with social stigma and the mystery behind her recurring fantasies. As Samantha navigates a path of self-discovery, her art becomes a powerful vehicle for self-expression and empowerment. By challenging conventional norms, this narrative presents a fresh perspective on mental health based on both hope and resilience. Exploring themes of identity, love, creativity, and social inclusion, Colors Outside the Cage offers a compelling and inspiring insight into the struggles many endure in silence as they confront mental health stigma and social exclusion.

SYNOPSIS:

Gabriela has just graduated from college and is getting a house from her grandmother while she goes on a year-long trip to Colombia, where she is from. But Gabriela needs a roommate to cover all the expenses. After several disastrous interviews, she meets Sofia, an aspiring witch with a unique personality. Sofia wears all black and loves to chat about (and with) ghosts. Gabriela is fascinated by her weirdness and chooses her.

Sofia brings an ancient wooden totem that happens to be magical and makes a spirit visible for the first time. The ghost is Nemo, a clumsy and naive ghost who died in his underwear and is deeply (and sadly) in love with Gabriela. Nemo becomes the third roommate, and the tree becomes the most unexpected of friends. Together, they will uncover a mystery that will change their lives forever.

When an unusual and creative teen moves to a foreign country due to her diplomat father's job, she battles language barriers, bullying, and her own demons. To survive, she delves into her imagination and embraces extreme experiences just to feel alive.

In a post-apocalyptic cyber future where everyone is chipped by an omniscient corporation, a runaway telepathic bounty hunter known as Elektra receives an unknown distress call that will lead her to seek revenge on the all-powerful corporation and finally uncover the truth about herself and her past.

PREMISE

Rose rushes home with her son after a curfew is imposed due to protests. Unable to leave, she begins to hallucinate and can't tell what's real and what's not. Until she sees her son strangely disappear and discovers that not only her sanity is at risk, but the truth itself.

WRITER'S STATEMENT

This is a story about trauma, grief, and memory. These are all themes that are present in this surrealistic dramatic short film, which offers us messages of a psychological, social, and existential nature.

One of the arguments presented is that without memory, grief can consume us from within, affecting our mental health in ways that are sometimes irreparable. In this sense, showing Rose trying to hold on to the memory of something that causes her pain is a way of saying that memory is necessary for the grieving process. But at the same time, there is a particular challenge about the context of this story. It is set in a social conflict where the forces of law and order are repressing the population with no regard for the deaths of civilians. This leads us to a painful statement: if the authorities do not respect people's lives, they will certainly not respect their memory.

RED BALLOON is inspired by recent events in Peru, where more than 50 innocent civilians have died at the hands of the government security forces. However, by setting it in the future (as it uses technology that does not yet exist), its purpose is to ask what will happen later to the families of the victims. In a world where technology is advancing faster than human rights... who will take care of their mental health?

In terms of symbolism, the red balloon represents the pain of losing someone as precious and innocent as a child. The change in the size of the balloon as the story progresses is a narrative expression, from Rose's perspective, of how much she is coming to terms with and working through her grief. It also shows the character's break from reality as someone is trying to alter her memory. This also represents derealisation, a common symptom in post-traumatic stress patients.

The final plot reveals the ultimate purpose of this social drama: to criticize manipulation in a post-truth era, represented by the character of the doctor and the treatment that attempts to alter Rose's memory to make her a functional subject for society, and to show how authorities can choose to lie and hide the truth just to gain power and control. In other words, this story condemns any attempt to alter memory (individual or historical) for political manipulation to deprive human beings of some of their most basic rights: the right to life, dignity, and memory.
